Just because people started playing laser tag in the 80’s doesn’t mean the game is outdated in 2023. Today it is as significant in the amusement industry as ever.
With advancements in both equipment and arenas, let’s just say that today’s game isn’t your parent’s laser tag (although we know they will still love it). Enhancements have been able to keep laser tag relevant in this age of rapid technological advancement. What it is about laser tag that makes it still fuel the interest of children and adults alike after all these years? Let’s take a look!
1. Equipment has evolved with many new and exciting features.
Though it is still essentially the same game, with so many equipment features and game types, there is no shortage of excitement in modern laser tag. Let’s take a look at a few of them.
Selfie Cameras
In the age of social media, we all love taking and sharing selfies. Now you can even share your selfie next time you play laser tag. As players zap opponents, their selfie will show up on the opponent’s screen. Parents can also see their children’s selfie on the scoreboards rather than trying to determine which code name is theirs.
Futuristic Style
Laser tag has always been a futuristic style game and players appreciate when equipment fits that futuristic ascetic as well. Vibrant lighting, easy use, and sleek styles of modern laser tag equipment helps players to feel like they are entering another world from the time they are in the vesting room. New styles of equipment also tend to look like less a children’s toy and while it is still easy for children to use, this also makes it more desirable for teenagers and adults as well.
Game Modes
Diehard laser tag players are always going to be looking for new and exciting challenges. The CyberBlast Pro software offers over 30 game formats that create new challenges and are great for frequent players. Though the most used formats are Team Game and Free For All, many Fun Centers utilize other formats of game play for special events or throughout the week for Player’s Nights. Many of the game types interact in different ways with the arena as well, creating an even more immersive game.
2. Arenas are more elaborate than ever.
Equipment isn’t the only thing that has kept up with the times. Laser tag arenas have more options and are more spectacular and immersive than ever. With so many choices for equipment, theming, and décor, arenas have many ways to remain current and exciting.
Themes and Props
Themes and props can help bring thrill and uniqueness to any laser tag attraction. Though players come for the game, a unique playing arena can help any fun center stand out against competitors. There are countless options for themes. Theming companies, such as Creative Works and Art Attack, can help operators to bring those concepts to fruition.
DMX Effects
DMX effects are now a part of hundreds of laser tag arenas and help to bring the entire experience to life. Targets can be used to trigger effects that, when used with props, bring an even higher level of excitement to a Laser Tag game.
AI Projector Targets
AI Projector Targets can be an unexpected way to bring an arena to life. Imagine an 8′ enemy that interacts with players being projected onto a part of the arena. These add an otherworldly aspect to your arena that can enhance the game and make it more memorable for players.
3. It's reasonably priced, but still very profitable.
Few things are more relevant in 2023 as saving money and making profits. Laser Tag attractions make it easy to provide guests with reasonable prices while still being one of the most profitable attractions you can have in a Fun Center.
The average playtime of a laser tag game tends to be around 8 to 10 minutes. With briefing, vesting, and unvesting, 15 minutes is a realistic time frame from start to finish. While this may sound brief, laser tag is a high energy game and the atmosphere and competitive nature tends to get a lot of adrenaline going in the players. Players are generally comfortable with this game time because while they are playing, it tends to seem longer and they will likely be ready for a break afterwards. With separate vesting and briefing rooms, you can have the next group ready to go before the previous session ends, making 4 games an hour realistic on a busy day. With 20-30 people per game, this means that 80-120 guests can utilize this attraction per hour.
With the high throughput a laser tag attraction brings and the low number of operators it needs to run (typical one is fine, or two during a busy period) it is easy to keep costs affordable while still being very profitable. Fun Centers tend to charge around $8-10 per player, per game. This is significantly lower cost of fun than many other options available, delivering a great value for an outing with family or friends. It’s a great way for a family to get out of the house without breaking the bank.
4. A great alternative to screen time that both kids and adults will enjoy.
With all of the technology and conveniences we have available today, it is very easy to spend too much time in front of a screen. According to the CDC, kids are spending an average of 6 or more hours a day in front of a screen. Parents are having to work harder to get their children off the couch and out into the world. Laser tag provides a great way to enjoy the excitement of technology while still getting the benefits of physical activity.
Laser tag is accessible for almost all ages and skill types and has something that is appealing to just about everyone. From the competitive nature, to the opportunity to strategize, to the physical game play involving zapping your opponents and other items around the arena, in a lot of ways it is like a real life video game…just without all the screen time!
